Tips for Safely Navigating the New Roundabouts
The roundabouts along Keystone Parkway are uniquely different from the standard roundabouts in Carmel. The separation of grade allows Keystone Parkway traffic to flow smoothly underneath the roundabout interchange. These travelers must first exit Keystone Parkway to access the roundabout. The new roundabouts also incorporate a double tear-drop shape, instead of a single round shape. However, this new design will function much the same as our previous roundabouts
Please remember these four tips:
- When approaching the roundabout, look to your left. Vehicles already in the roundabout have the right-of-way. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you do not need to stop. If there is traffic present, then wait for a break in traffic before entering the roundabout.
- Slow down — use proper judgment when determining how fast to drive around the roundabout. 15-20 mph is a safe speed.
- Select the appropriate lane before you enter the roundabout. Keep your car in the same lane as you enter and exit the roundabout. (see diagram)
- Buses, trucks, and vehicles with trailers may need more than one lane on the roundabout. Use caution when next to or near a larger vehicle when entering a roundabout.
